Diaper Change Checklist: Six Things to Check Before Putting on a Fresh Diaper

Diaper changes are an important part of your baby’s daily routine. Whether you are a new parent learning the basics or already familiar with diaper changes, having a simple diaper changing checklist can make the process easier, cleaner, and more comfortable for your little one.

A fresh baby diaper is only one part of a good diaper change. Before putting on a new one, it is helpful to check your baby’s skin, ensure the area is clean and dry, and make sure the diaper fits comfortably. Here are six things to check during every diaper change.

1. Check if the diaper needs changing

Start by checking the existing diaper. Depending on the diaper type, you may notice that it feels heavier, looks full, or has a wetness indicator that has changed colour. A soiled diaper should be changed promptly to help keep your baby clean and comfortable.

As part of your diaper care routine, regular checks are particularly important for newborns, who may need frequent diaper changes throughout the day.

2. Clean the diaper area gently

Once the old diaper is removed, gently clean your baby’s diaper area. You can use suitable baby wipes or cotton and water, depending on your baby’s needs and your usual routine.

For girls, cleaning from front to back can help prevent the spread of bacteria. For boys, clean gently without forcing or pulling back the foreskin. Avoid vigorous rubbing, as a baby’s skin can be delicate and sensitive.

A gentle cleaning routine is an important part of maintaining healthy skin during frequent diaper changes.

3. Make sure the skin is dry

Before putting on a fresh baby diaper, check that the skin is reasonably clean and dry. Gently pat the area dry rather than rubbing it.

Moisture trapped against the skin for prolonged periods can contribute to irritation. Giving the area a few moments to air-dry, when practical, can also make the diaper-changing process more comfortable.

If you notice persistent redness, swelling, broken skin, or other changes that concern you, consider speaking with your baby’s healthcare professional.

4. Check for signs of irritation

Take a quick look at your baby’s skin during each change. Look for redness, chafing, bumps, or areas that appear unusually irritated.

Mild irritation can sometimes occur as part of everyday diaper wearing, especially when diapers are changed frequently. A consistent diaper care routine including timely changes, gentle cleaning, and keeping the area dry—can help support your baby’s comfort.

If a rash persists, worsens, or appears painful, seek advice from a qualified healthcare professional rather than relying solely on home care.

5. Check the diaper size and fit

Before fastening the fresh diaper, check that you are using the appropriate size for your baby. The diaper should sit comfortably around the waist and legs without being excessively tight or loose.

A good fit should allow your baby to move comfortably while providing adequate coverage. Check the leg gathers to make sure they are positioned correctly and not folded inward.

As your baby grows, their diaper size may need to change. If you frequently notice leakage, red marks, or difficulty fastening the diaper comfortably, it may be worth checking whether the current size is still suitable.

6. Keep everything you need within reach

A smooth newborn diaper routine is easier when essentials are ready before you begin. Keep fresh diapers, wipes or cotton, a clean cloth, and any other products you regularly use within easy reach.

Most importantly, never leave your baby unattended on a changing surface, even for a moment. If you need something, keep your baby secure and take them with you if necessary.

Making diaper changes simpler

A consistent diaper changing checklist can help turn diaper changes into a simple everyday routine. Check the diaper, clean gently, make sure the skin is dry, look for irritation, check the fit, and keep your supplies ready.

With these basic steps, diaper care can become a more organised part of your baby’s daily routine, helping you focus less on remembering every step and more on keeping your little one comfortable, clean, and cared for.
