The root cause is almost always one of two things: motor stress or moisture ingress. Let's break both down.
Motor stress occurs when the pump is consistently run on its highest suction setting for extended periods, session after session. Breast pump motors are sized for a specific workload range. Running constantly at maximum torque generates heat, accelerates component wear, and degrades performance much faster than moderate use would. Many mothers make the intuitive but incorrect assumption that higher suction means more milk. In reality, the highest setting frequently produces less output than a moderate setting because the excessive pressure causes the breast tissue to resist rather than release. Using mid-range suction settings is both better for milk expression and kinder to the motor.
Moisture ingress is the other critical factor. When milk backs up into the tubing - which happens when the backflow protector fails or is incorrectly assembled - it can travel toward the motor unit. Even microscopic quantities of milk residue in the motor housing create the conditions for bacterial growth, seal degradation, and ultimately, motor failure. The backflow protector must be dry and properly seated before every session.
The solutions are straightforward once the causes are understood: use the lower-to-mid suction settings as your baseline, increase only if genuinely needed. After every session, check the tubing for any moisture and allow it to air-dry completely. Inspect and replace the backflow protector and duckbill valve on a regular schedule.
